Water, Water Everywhere

Did you know that today is United Nations World Oceans Day? While it is against the laws of nature to make a quilt of water and fish - and would be kind of gross even if you could - I am starting a quilt inspired by water.

This is the first pull for that quilt. To be honest, I got the idea when I did the pull for my Key Lime Pie quilt. I just loved the looks of the greens with blues that I used for the limes. Still on the high from the memories of Baja these fabrics jumped out of the stash and begged to be sewn together.

As I said, this was the first pull. I always have that initial rush of fabric delight and pull everything out that my conceivably work with the colourful notion in my head. When designing heads prevail I weed out about a third. Then, as I cut, more gets culled from the pile and maybe some other ones get added in. It would be different if I started out with a specific pattern in mind. Because for me quilting if often about process rather than final design, the fabric choices are dynamic and continually evolving.

I'm curious to see where this one takes me.

I love these fabric colors. I know what you mean about the process - my fabric choices are always in question until they actually get sewn together.

Great colors. I agree with you about the process. For me the initial planning and thought is very enjoyable. I also get a "rush of fabric delight". Are we addicts?

This is exactly how I start quilts!

See if you can find the "Dorky Homemade Quilt Look" blog. That may not be the exact title, but she recently showcased a cool sea inspired quilt she did.
But, seriously love the colors you pulled and agree there's that initial rush of "I've got this great idea," and then there's the "I'm really hate this project but I want to have it done" phase. That last part is where I end many projects that just aren't going right.

Don 't you just love pulling out fabrics for a new quilt! I too often make changes to the initial inspiration fabrics. I can't wait to see the quilt you are planning.

I can' wait to see what quilt pattern you are going to use! I'm kind of at a quilting stump when it comes to patterns. I don't want to do something I've seen a million times but I can't think of anything else to do! THanks for stopping by the blog, the doily on that pillow is in the seams, I appliqued it on the pillow front before sewing the pillow together, so the corner of the doily was cut off and sewn into the pillow cover. Thanks for saying hi- Allison

Lovely fabrics! How calm an ocean inspired quilt will be. I'm right there with you on the pulling fabrics before having a plan and then weeding out/adding as you decide.
