Trust Me

*** This giveaway is now closed ***

It's the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day!

I'm still feeling generous so I thought I would share more fabric.  It would make sense, then, to show you the fabric I plan to give away.  Yes, that would make perfect sense.  Unfortunately, my camera is not cooperating right now so I can't download the photos.  You'll just have to trust me.

Come on, you know I can pick the good stuff.  I love putting together based on colour and feel. In fact, quite often I will just pull fabric from my stash for some imaginary quilt. Maybe I'll bring home a new fabric that I bought just because.  Just because I liked it.  So I hit the stash and see what I have that works with it.  Maybe I'll even put that grouping aside for a while and let it simmer.  Maybe I'll let The Monster help me and see what she comes up with.  Maybe I'll even start a project then and there.  No pattern, no plan, just a pile of fabric and a little inspiration along the way.

For the giveaway please leave a comment telling me how you pick fabric for a quilt - does the fabric comes first or the pattern/design?  And tell me which colourway you prefer:

Yellow/pink
Green/Orange/Yellow
Red/Aqua
Green/Blue
Brown/Blue

I will pull from my stash 6 fat quarters in the winners choice colourway.  And I have no problem shipping internationally (I'm in Canada) so please drop me a comment by May 31

Don't forget to visit the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway site to see the rest of the blog giveaways. There is some good stuff out there.  Feel free to explore a little here too.

green/orange/yellow

and it's always fabric first. for some reason the colors draw me in and the pattern just seems to easily come after that.

yellow and pink here please. and sometimes it is color first and othe times it is pattern first. i guess it just depends on my mood.

for me the fabrics come first then I will work later to find the pattern that fit them.

I have my blog in 'Thai' language and I named it 'Pink studio'. This means I don't have any hesitation to say ..yellow and pink is my favorite colourway. Anything with pink is me. :-)

A fellow Calgarian - how exciting :)

I'm fairly new to quilting, but would have to say at this point, I have a colour scheme in mind but choose a pattern before picking out specific fabric.

As for your generous giveaway - I'm going to have to go pink and yellow. I'm going to be starting off my daughter's "big girl quilt" and her room is a mix of pinks and greens. Yellow would be a nice splash in the mix!

I think I'd love to try the yellow/pink grab bag!

I haven't made TOO many quilts, but I guess I've picked the patterns first, and then the fabrics. But so far my fabrics have only been "old sheets" or "novelty fabrics", so nothing too complicated! Of the colourways you listed, I'd pick green/blue.

By the way, I love your "key lime" quilt! And the "your parents are cool" quilt is just brilliant. I'm putting your blog in my reader. :-)

I pick my fabric first, then decide on a pattern. It seems that when I see great fabric, the ideas start flowing.

Red/Aqua is my choice of color palette!

okay, let me try this again and try to answer all your questions!

I have the feeling that this is going to be a great giveaway! just added you to my google reader -- I'm liking what I see.

Thanks!

Oh, and duh, pink/yellow. We're very girly in these parts.

And I actually started to say I start with fabric first, but I think that's a lie. I start with a pattern I want and then go out and buy the fabric. Which is probably why I don't manage to use my stash very well.

let's see...I love red/aqua...and i think quilts happen both ways to me. sometimes I find fabric that I just love together and the pattern comes second, sometimes I find a pattern I love. sometimes a quilt starts off as one thing and ends up another...today i found a stack of fabrics I had thrown on a shelf left over from several other projects and they looked great together so now they are on their way to becoming a quilt! you just never know I guess!

I always buy the fabric before I decide on the project. I go into a shop and see fabric I like and then I start imagining different projects I could use it for. I'll usually buy a bunch of coordinating fabric too. Then I'll pick or make up a pattern and make something. I love the red/aqua combo.

First, I want to tell you how wonderful your quilts are. They are amazing! I am not a quilter, but if I did quilt - I would hope mine are as nice as yours!

So, I am not a quilter, but a sewer. So, I hope I can still enter this draw! I usually pick my fabric first. I love shopping for fabrics. Then when I get the fabric I try and decide what to make out of it. Sometimes it is just so hard to cut into the fabric :)

Thanks for the giveaway!

Green/Orange/yellow. I'm new to quilting so i pick the fabrics (always all colors but same tone) then make your basic blocks. i like scrap quilts!

Probably a bit of both, fabric leads to a good pattern, a pattern influences choice of fabric. I'd choose the green/orange/yellow colourway.

Still working on number 1 which was fabric first. I have another waiting for some action though that was pattern first!

I think I'd like the brown/blue colourway, thanks!!

Knittin' Diva said...

I am forever being told how "backwards" I do things, as I ALWAYS buy the fabric first, and then find a patter that "speaks" to the fabric. This does, of course, leave me in a bit of a predicament, when the pattern calls for more fabric than I've purchased. As anyone creative does, I "improvise". Fabric colors....brown/blue. Love the contrast!

Vicki said...

Typically it's the fabric that speaks to me. I've bought fabric with no quilt in mind because I just love the fabric. Then I hav eto find a pattern that will work. But there are some times when I find a pattern that is very interesting and it seems to take a fair bit of hunting to find the right combination of fabrics for that pattern. I'll go with the red/aqua combo.

Sandra said...

I love red and blue. As I just startet quilting I don't have much experience but I usualy dont follow pattern just let me inspire by fabric and then go ahed..

Ange Moore said...

Brown / Blue sounds like a winner for me. But I also love the idea of the aqua / red (sounds fun) or the green / blue too!

How do I choose fabric for a quilt? I've only made one so far and I relied quite heavily on the lovely lady behind the counter at the store - we picked a couple of lovely Moda fabrics and went from there!

Here's hoping I'm going to be a lucky Tasmanian. Thanks for hosting such a generous giveaway.

I have a problem with orphans in my stash. On their own they are fab, but somehow won't play nicely with others. Or it could be my eye that needs training! So I start with whatever works.

Very generous giveaway, thanks - whether I win or not!?

blue/brown, always love blue/brown. Only thing better than blue/brown is add a bit of lime green ;-) Only thing I really dislike is pink, but then I do have some candy pinks - I use them for gifts for others.

Love your improv quilt, btw, very, very nice.

Thanks for the chance!

The inspiration doesnt always run the same way when I am starting a project. I used to work at a fabric store, so it was dangerous because everyday I imagined new projects in my head from all the fabrics. Sadly my wallet didnt stretch as far as the imagination, being in school and all. ;) But also, as a painter, I really think with colors, and build a painting, or a sewing project from there.

The Green/Blue color way sounds great to me. Also, your Wednesday night races quilt is simply beautiful.... I love the composition. And after seeing that, I can tell you must have amazing scraps in your stash. :)

Yellow/pink is our world around here. I have to have a pattern completely set and then obsess over finding exactly the right colors and prints...which explains why quilts are so slow in forthcoming.

Big wave hello from Toronto! I always start with the fabric first; very rarely do I buy with any sense of what I'm going to make in my head. I just get what I love and then it all falls together from there. I prefer a green/blue colourway. Thanks :D

Linda T said...

I really don't know how I pick. Sometimes the fabric comes first, other times the pattern. I usually just wing it. I really don't have much of a stash, so I end up starting from scratch almost everytime.

I really like brown and anything, especially brown and pink, or brown and blue.

Enjoy your giveaway!

Steph said...

I confess that I'm not yet an actual quilter. But I'm so inspired by all the improv-style quilts I'm seeing lately that I'm definitely going to be making one of my own soon.

I do a lot of refashioning of thrifted clothing and sewing with vintage sheets and tablecloths. I think it would be really cool to put together a scrap quilt with pieces from all the clothes I've been working on lately.

And my favorite colorway? Red/Aqua, hands down.

Amy said...

I'm currently making my first quilt, and I chose based on the pattern first. Though I have to say I buy lots of fabric with no plan in mind, and magically, when I get home, the fabric finds something that it wants to be! My current fave combo is red/aqua. But I love brown/blue and green/orange/yellow. Anything bright!

The pattern/design comes first and then the fabric. I decide the pattern based on how much time I have for whoever I am making the quilt for. I then think about the colours they like. My colourway would be the red/aqua. Thank you for such a great giveaway.

kjansma said...

I just made my first two quilts--twin size for my daughters' beds. It was a simple pattern but the fabrics were scraps from skirts and dresses I've made for them over the last few years. So, very busy but in a hopefully not tacky way. The red/aqua colorway sounds very intriguing.

Anyway, love red and aqua right now.

I do a bit of both, but more often than not, I see a quilt first and think-oh, that would look good like this and look through my scraps to see what I have to work with before purchasing anything.

I quite often find fabrics first. My rule is "if you see it,love it, then pick it up. It may not be there when you go back". I can be the same way with patterns. I have a couple just waiting for the perfect fabric to get me inspired..

I haven't worked with green/yellow/orange before. That could be interesting.

Hermione J. Schwartz said...

Ha! Picking fabrics is so hard for me! First I try not to have too big of a stash so that can limit the options at first. Usually I go rummaging through the stash and scraps until I find some long lost piece of something then make a huge mess on the floor mixing and matching fabric friends. A similar dance is made at the fabric store. I know I must look like a mess, but it gets the job done! I am currently making a green/orange/yellow quilt so I choose the blue/brown FQs. And eventhough we've never met you have a trustworthy aire about you. =]

Hmm, probably inspiration from someone else's quilt that I realize I'll never be able to have myself. Then when I just can't get it out of my head I go crazy collecting similar fabrics and keep picking fabrics until the last inch of MY quilt is sewn. Yeah, I'm the little green copycat called "envy" so I suppose my color pick should be Green, and whatever else you think would look great,thank-you.

Design first, then fabric, although I get stuck on a fabric and try and talk myself into the design I want with that fabric. That usually doesn't work. I usually need to know right away that they belong together, otherwise it's forced.

I am loving the brown/blue combos these days. Thanks so much!

For me the fabric always comes first, I see it, I buy it and then magically what I'm supposed to do with it just happens. Love it.
Blue and brown do it for me these days, thanks

I love blue/brown combinations.

Lets see, I think I go both ways usually I have a quilt location in mind, hence some idea of colors pick a pattern and then start rummaging through my stash. But occasionally a pattern jumps out at me and I then I have to think colors second and try not to let the original colors influence me.

I think my colorway would be pink and green. But since thats not an option, how about blue and green instead.

Your quilts are amazing! I have had a wander through your blog but will be coming back for more! I tend to find one piece of fabric I really like, use it as a strating point then build up from there. At the moment I am collecting red and aqua fabrics. Thank you for a fun mystery giveaway and the chance to win!

I'm actually working on my first quilt! And I chose the colors based on what I wanted in my bedroom and just found fabrics that fit. Not very inspired, huh! I love, love, love red and aqua!!!

Hi!
I love all sorts of colours and patterns but am particularly drawn to the red/aqua colourway (I think it's because of living with three males, blue for them and a little bit of red for me) :)
I haven't yet attempted quilting but I have my Japanese craft book (http://huangfamily.com/craftingjapanese/archives/2006/05/isbn457911020x.html) and am dying to try *something* soon!
Thanks for your generous give-away!

For me the fabric comes first. Not 100% of the time but, yea, mostly it's the fabric that tells me what pattern / style quilt to make.
I am loving brown/blue colors right now.
Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

Hi
I love aqua/red quilts, but I'm having a hard time finding reds that I like, I think red is a difficult color... :-)
Usually the fabric comes first,I like using fabrics from the same range

I think I'll pick yellow/pink... not my favorites but definitely my daughter's favorites, and since I need to make her a quilt that's a good thing...

My best memory is definitely holding my first quilt in my arms after getting it back from the lovely woman who actually quilted it for me. I had hand-pieced a king-sized charm quilt for my brother's wedding present and to wrap my arms around the finished product was about the best feeling int he world. I made that!

blue/green please, if I'm lucky enough. More charm quilts for the other brothers and their new wives.

I actually don't quilt much, but I typically choose fabric with girly designs because I mainly sew for my little girls.

As for the colorway, I like all of them, but mostly Yellow/Pink.

I am a newbie, so not many quilts made, but I fall in love with the fabric and then make the quilt that suits it. Red/Aqua!!!!

So sweet of you to do this, please put my name in the drawing :)

Poerava said...

I usually pick a design 1st but sometimes the fabric comes 1st. I have 6 half yards from the same line that are awaiting the perfect design, I am thinking a pinwhell quilt with coordinating solids but I am not sure yet.

Green/Blue

Amanda Jean said...

usually i pull fabrics, then choose a design. i like to pile up my fabric and gaze at it a few days (weeks, or months) and then come up with the perfect pattern for it. (i usually go through 8-10 ideas before a final decision. it's amazing i get anything done, isn't it???)

Amanda Jean said...

i forgot to add, i'd take any color combo if i were to win. (and you can delete one of my comments. i wish i could edit my comment...would be much easier!)

Always Green/Blue for me! I have only sewn one quilt so far, and I had the pattern first and then picked the fabric. But I can see in my future having the fabric and then picking the pattern . . .

Love browns, blues, greens...probably because I have boys and this works best in our house. I haven't ventured on making a quilt YET, but have saved TONS of jeans to start a jean rag quilt.

I love a combo of red and aqua! I pick fabric for quilts based on one fabric first, it could be a favorite print or a favorite color. Then I just go through my stash to see what goes with it.

I almost always fall in love with the fabric first and then try to figure out what to make with it! Granted I am very new, and have no stash really, so that's where it all started.

I personally am a green/blue kinda girl, and I love the dots you assembled for your last giveaway, so I am sure you'll send greatness!

Yellow and Pink for me! With me the colors would come before the design. Thanks for the chance to win.

Red/aqua...I LOVE that scheme.

I explored your blog and your quilts are amazing. If I had the space, I woul start quilting today. I love your improv quilt, and the blue and green one with bubbles (that is what it looks like to me). I will definitely have to visit again. Thanks for the giveaway.

I like yellow/pink since the next quilt I plan to make is for my daughter. I usually pick the pattern and then the fabric.

When I started quilting I used to pick fabic first, now I pick pattern first so I don't drive myself batty. Green/blue would be great.

Tallulah said...

I'm a real beginner, and I've never actually made a quilt yet, but I've been collecting fabrics for one for over a year - so I'd have to say, fabric first! I would have to say red and aqua. Hope your daughter is better.

B said...

Red/aqua. Love the splash of colour this offers. How I pick my quilt. Well, considering I JUST picked out the stuff for my first one I have to say that I went with a pattern first, because I knew I had to do something easier. BUT, that being said I picked colours according to my whim. If I was more experienced I'd do colours first since those are what would make me love it.

Fabric first - then I need to figure out what to do with it!

But I guess that is why I have a out-of-control stash. I just need to find some patterns now;)

My favourite colour combo these days is Red/Aqua so that is what I would choose.

thanks for sharing!

I'm so sorry to hear about Monster's arm! The picture of her sucking her thumb is sad and so precious! I hope she's feeling much better.

As for picking fabric, I usually go in looking for one thing -- maybe a coordinating fabric to accent a current project or something to fill a certain need. Then, I see another something I like. And it needs a coordinating fabric or two. Or three. Then, while looking for that - WOW! - I find another amazing fabric.

The next thing you know I'm pulling up to the cutting table with a huge cart full of fabric and everyone else is groaning because it'll take 30 minutes to cut my stuff.

I gotta curb this addiction.

The red/aqua colorway sounds rather intriguing right now. I'll go for that.

Thanks for the chance to enter!

Hi!

Thanks for doing this great giveaway!
I have actually never made a quilt before, I just got my sewing machine this year, so I am still a beginner. BUT, I am going to attempt to make a patchwork duvet cover. I'm thinking a red/aqua color combo would be beautiful! It's going to be for my cousin who is finally getting her own place. She'll be living in Alaska, so she'll need fresh, cheery decor to brighten those gloomy days.

Have a great weekend!

Hey Naptime Quilter.

I always pick one fabric in a shop I absolutely love then match up other bits in the shop that go really well with this, Failing that I know I have a huge stash at home which also helps.

I would like to be considered for Brown/Blue colourway, as Im currently on a quilting block swap and that is my colour way, your fabrics could finish this off lovely (stop by my blog and inquire for details if your interested)

Unfortunately I can't quilt yet, but it is one of my goals someday. I would choose the pink and yellow colorway I think, but really any of them would be lovely!

I've only so far made two small baby quilts for my daughters, but I definitely picked the colors first. For the first, I went and stood in front of the overwhelming wall at Joann's. I actually even asked my husband to help me. But by the time the second daughter came around, I started with a piece I loved and built around it, feeling my way and choosing from several different stores. But I didn't use a pattern for either one, I just winged it. They were babies, after all. They didn't mind if it wasn't perfect.

My favorite colors at the moment are definitely red and aqua. I had red t-straps on with aqua socks today and I couldn't take my eyes off my feet.

mub said...

Oooh I'm torn between the yellow/pink and the green/orange/yellow! I don't know that I really have a method to picking out my fabrics. If I find a piece I really love I try to build off of it and go from there!

oh blue/brown is my favourite at the moment!

Sarah Seitz said...

Wow, this is very generous! I have only made 3 quilts, but so far I have used a technique I discovered and posted about. I create a digital mock up of the quilt first, which allows me to test the layout! here's the post where I explain how it's done: http://comeandseetheseitz.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/tutorial-how-to-make-a-digital-quilt-mock-up/

Favorite colorway: Red and Aqua (only because I don't have much of either of those in my stash!). Thanks!

Green and blue is a great color combo but so is red and aqua...decisions, decisions!
For the most part I buy cotton and then color...let my eyes do the walking, so to speak.

gosh...did my response not come thru???
Well, love green and blues...also red and aquas...decisions, decision!
I'd probably make a table cloth for the small front porch table where Dave and I have a glass of wine on nice evenings. We love to watch the life unfold down the valley - horses, sheep, cattle and dogs and cats playing in the pasture or yard.

Red aqua sounds great. Thanks

Ettabug said...

I design my quilts on the computer so I test drive different colorways for my quilts. I use a really simple palette and then once I start making the quilt I settle on the shades, tints, & tones of the colors I use in my design.

Although, I have had a couple of quilts that the design is being settled by the fabric. I have a duck quilt in progress.

Ooh, for the colorways man its a hard choice. I would have to say either green/orange/yellow or green/blue, but red/aqua would be a lot of fun to try. I would have to say surprise me, please.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Thanks for doing this. I'm excited to look through more of your blog. I usually pick fabric first, typically from what I have.

I like Green/Orange/Yellow.

Silka said...

I pick out fabric first, I have a horrible time if I start out with a pattern in mind. In fact I've got a design in mind for yellow/orange fabric and I can't find much I like, do I'd love to win some of that. Thanks!

Melissa@Vidastyle said...

I love red/aqua colourway and usually will fall in love with a fabric and decide from there...

Suze said...

Hmmm, sometimes the design comes first then the color, sometimes the otherway around. It depends on the fabric and the pattern...does that make sense? As far as colors,...blue, green, pink,...I'm flexible. (^o^)

Shrinkie said...

I can work either way - fabric first and then pattern or vice versa.

I would love the Red/aqua choice.

Tasha said...

oh for me its the design that comes first. I am still trying to get a handle on matching fabrics asnd different colourways. I would love green/blue if I am lucky enough to win :)

I have only made one quilt (you can see the top finished here: http://molacoser.blogspot.com/2009/05/top.html), and although I knew what the design was going to be before I bought the fabric, I really chose it because of the color.

I think if I won I would like to go for the green/orange/yellow or the red/aqua... I can't choose, so YOU do! Oh, and based on the pictures of your quilts... I TOTALLY trust your taste in choosing the good stuff, as you say :-)

Cheers from sunny Barcelona, Spain! (One of my nieces is going to Canada for 10 days this summer, with school... I'm so envious of her!!)

I pick a pattern and then I go looking for fabric although I sometimes get way off track.

Courtney said...

I've yet to make a quilt, so I'll tell you how I pick fabric for other things instead, hows that sound. When it comes to clothes, I think about what I plan on wearing what I'm making too and then chose fabric that would be appropriate for the occasion. For everyday clothes (especially skirts) I like bright and fun.
As far as colorways I've fallen in love with Red/Aqua lately, so that would be my choice I think.
