Water Version 1

What do you think?  Seriously, what do you think?

I had some time yesterday to play with layouts for my water quilt.  I want your opinion.  Every day this week I will post another version. Please tell me what you like and don't like about it. Tell me if it works or if it is complete crap. I've got very thick skin, so please be brutally honest. I have some preferences, but I'm not going to tell you what they are.  I'm looking for other opinions.

A couple of things to keep in mind.  I'm not tied to using all the pieces I made, nor am I opposed to making new ones to fit in. If you have other ideas for layout I would be happy to hear them. And just so you know, none of these pieces are trimmed because I do plan on joining them together as I pieced them, with wavy lines.

So, v1.  What do you think?

What great colors and I love how you're playing around with it. I really like the movement on the right side of the quilt, but I don't really like the horizontal pieces next to each other in the lower left. I think I might like it better of the horizontal stripes were a continuous piece.

not an exeperienced quilter by any means but I really like the basketweave look of the pieces perpendicular to each other (the horizontals against the verticals). I like the depth it gives the quilt.

I like it just the way it is! It sounds like you aren't completly happy with it. The only thing I would change is the first strip on the left since it is the only one with strips across the whole quilt.

love the colour combinations, but not thrilled (well, I still like it) with the layout...the balance seems a little off. perhaps switch the top left horizontals with the slightly left vertical piece?

i would just spread it all out and add some sashing.

i love the colors, makes me want some kind of limey drink.

I think it's to soon to tell...Is that all the pieces? how big is this?
if its' all of the pieces the only thing that springs to mind is the first column of stripes, needs a few darks, perhaps towards the bottom, the right seems heavier with darker colors. something to separate the block next to it with the stripes going the same way... I hate giving advice on other peoples stuff because we all have our own eyes for these things... very to each his own... You make lovely quilts dahrlin, you'll work it out.

I like it, but it reads more like grass than water. I feel like water should have more blue. But if I didn't know it was supposed to be water, I would have liked it anyway!

The colors are beautiful. I need to know the size of the finished quilt before I can comment. Since I love white spaces, I would suggest some sashing.

It seems well balanced in regards to the layout of the horizontal and vertical pieces. My only comment would be the top right horizontal piece seems a little bit heavy. If it was slightly thinner (say a strip or two less) I think that issue would be solved. Looking forward to the rest of your layouts! *I agree with others though that it really depends on the rest of the quilt... because the heaviness issue could be solved depending on what block was put next to it.

I like the upper right section. I'm seeing an almost landscape effect. You know water, trees and sky. The two darker strips give the piece a little more depth, something about how far apart the darks are from each other work in that section more than in the other parts. I think it will be beautiful.

I really like the idea of what your doing and of course I don't think its "complete crap"
I like the 2 squares on the lower right side the best. Lower rightist is my fav.
When I squint at it I don't get water... I think the change in direction is too extreme. I think you could get a real ripple effect if it was more in a waveish pattern or rippley.
1.I may not have cut them all the strips the same size or used a rotary cutter for that matter to give it that ripple look .
2.I would join the strip sets at a much reduced angle. Instead of 90 degrees I would try between 15-40 goiing from side to side or diagonally from the upper corner.
3. steeper angles around "rocks or logs of you add solid blocks.
4. I don't think the yellows read "water" I would ditch them. Same with the blue fabric with the black squares.

IM coming back tomorrow! I love giving an opinion... no harm no foul just saying what I think...
seriously! don't even listen to me... just let me talk.. :)

I like this alot. It is very interesting piece. Listen to it, it well tell you which direction you need to go. I can't wait to see what it is. Happy sewing!

I too think it is interesting, but resembles grass more than water. I think the yellow pieces are what is causing that. The layout works fine though. I can't wait to see more!

I like it, think it's pretty. But it doesn't really feel like water to me. I think it's the vertical stuff. Horizontal lines/waves seems more like water to me. Also it's not reading blue. But I guess it depends on what water you want it to remind you of. There's a lot of green in some water.

The Bow (?) River amazed me as the prettiest blue river I'd every seen. We have a muddy Red! So that aqua seems perfect. But I kinda feel water runs horizontally unless you've got reeds happening. I shall 'stay tuned'!
