Cut First

Look at me! Cutting all in advance of sewing. That is a seriously big deal, folks. The vast majority of work that I do starts with me sewing, not planning. Even my book quilts generally start with a little bit of sewing before I stop and figure out what I'm actually doing. But this time I drew the pattern and cut everything before I sewed a stitch.

This is what is becoming of the necklace inspired fabric pull. It has a destination and pattern that will be available in not too long.  Pretty excited to share it with you. It's a rather cool quilt with a really awesome final destination. Soon.

What about you? Are you a cut everything first quilter? Or would you rather start then sew a little?

I sew a little and it usually develops from there unless it is a more traditional quilt. Have fun!

Will I see you at market? Let's have tea if you are coming!

I usually cut as much as I can first because it isn't my favorite part and I hate to stop and do more cutting when I'm doing the fun sewing part :)

I am a planner! I know my entire cut list and piece count before I even pick fabrics.

I almost always cut as i sew. I tend to get bored easily if everything is planned out ahead. Making design/fabric choices is the best part of making a quilt, so i like to spread it out. a few times when I have followed a pattern and cut it all out ahead, it takes me by surprise how much faster it all goes together! Can't wait to see your pattern!

Depends on the project. I tend to vary… If working from a set pattern, I almost always cut everything first so I don't have to stop once i get going and so that I know how much room I have for mistakes in my leftovers, and so I can still get the same fabric (if it's crucial ) in case the project sits for a while. I almost never cut backs ahead of time as I usually piece those from leftovers and tend to be quite improv-y with them.

I don't always know where I'm going with things. I'd probably waste less with foundation piecing if I cut first but that seems like too much work...

Cut a little, sew a little, cut more, then sew more.

I like not ruining all my fabric in case I hate it or change plans (which happens a lot!)

When 'production' quilting I cut everything first. When I get on a 'roll' I hate to stop and cut more pieces. Beulah

I sew together one block because I'm so excited to see what they are going to look like, then go back and cut all of the pieces. I like to chain piece so need all the pieces ready in a bit of a production line.

I cut strips ahead and lay them over the rack my hubby built me but I don't cut them specific to any given piece. I improv Every Little Thing all the time. Might have to try that PlanAhead once

You know me. I'm a cut and sew kinda girl. Because I, like you, never quite know where I am gonna end up. It's fun that way!
