The Whys

Since the creative production here isn't all that high, I've been thinking a lot about creative production. For me, that means writing and quilting. Over the course of a few conversations with a good friend we've asked each other about style, why we quilt, and what we think of when we talk about quilting.

Today I am going to address the last question.  It's kind of a word association game.
When you think of quilting, what words come to mind?

For me, quilting means:

Creativity
Uniqueness
Comfort
Colour
How
Those were my first instinct words, what are yours?

Warmth, love, Mr Darcy.

(That's my sewing machine's name.)

I love that first comment. I need to name my sewing machine!

For me... color, design, joy!

This is harder than I thought- when I asked that question, my mind flooded with images. I guess I think in pictures.

If I have to break the pictures down into words- Nanny (my Great-Grandma), recycle, colors, original, pride, share

(I loved that a previous poster mentioned her great-grandma also!)

"Therapy" comes to mind. :-)

PS - Frogdancer: I don't know you but I love that your sewing machine is named Mr. Darcy. That is the most excellent thing I have heard this weekend!!

i've tried to leave this comment 3 times...different words each time...i guess i have lots of thoughts in my head about this, but they're not clear...art, design and push come to my head first...skill, flow...movement...maybe i'm thinking too much.

What an easy, yet difficult question to answer. I'm like most, I think in pictures. I guess I'd have to go with relaxing, Aunt Dean, harmony, creativity, uniqueness, passion, warmth and love.

timeless...
I always think of the timelessness of quilting. I feel connected to the comforting practice that women have done for centuries.

Absolutely what HipHome said: CONNECTION to the women of previous generations. Related to that, LEGACY - my quilts will outlast me, as the ones I have from my ancestors have outlived them. Also, as we have gotten so far away from making and moved towards buying everything, there is the satisfaction of making something BEAUTIFUL and FUNCTIONAL.

Color, pattern, touch, beauty... I wish I could think of something more profound, butt that really is it! Thanks for the exercise; it's always good to stop and think about what you're doing.

The word "inspiration" comes to mind. When ever I am quilting, something new inspires me to continue with another project.

Cheryl - you have completely changed my archaic view of quilting. love the pics you posted with this post, the colors you use in your work, etc. I guess quilting isn't just for "old ladies" ;-)
